Retail Report: Fresh fish dominate summer sales

South presents greatest opportunity for supermarket fresh

Fresh fish is the second largest category in the supermarket seafood department behind shellfish and is an attractive category for holiday meals.

Nationally, fresh fish sales accounted for an average of 34.6 percent of department dollar sales per week per store during the 52-weeks ending Sept. 30, up from 34.1 percent the previous year. Average fresh-fish dollar sales registered $1,681 per week per store. Historically, sales for fresh fish are highest during the spring and remain elevated throughout the summer grilling season. The first week in March 2006 (corresponding with Ash Wednesday) posted the greatest fresh-fish sales, with an average of $2,106 per week per store. The lowest week during the timeframe for fresh-fish sales was the Thanksgiving week in 2005, with average per week per store sales of $1,098.

Except for February, fresh-fish sales were up in the first nine months of 2006 compared to 2005. Fresh-fish contribution to total seafood dollar sales was up in seven of the first nine months of 2006 compared to 2005.

The Central region captured the greatest fresh-fish contribution to total seafood department sales during the 52 weeks ending September 2006, averaging 37.3 percent per week per store. The East Coast posted the greatest fresh fish sales of $2,631 per week per store.

The greatest opportunity for fresh fish was the South, with average sales of only $1,335 per week per store, and average category contribution to total seafood sales of 32.7 percent. However the South jumped in both average weekly dollar sales (by $137) and contribution (by 0.3 percentage points) over last year.
